Kayak Choice

The most expensive item you will need, is, of course, a kayak.

When selecting a kayak, there are a few factors to consider such as stability, maneuverability, and storage space.

Sit-on-top kayaks are a popular choice for bass fishing due to their stability and ease of use. Look for a kayak with a wide hull and a weight capacity that can accommodate you and your fishing gear.

Additionally, consider features such as rod holders and storage compartments to keep your fishing gear organized.

While many different name brands exist, I started with a cheaper kayak model.  I purchased the Lifetime Yukon Angler 116 from Walmart for around $500.00.  Of course, with inflation, It now costs $798.00.

However, there are cheaper kayaks like the Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 Fishing Kayak that will work.

You can also consider purchasing a used kayak if you are a first-timer, especially if you have a minimal budget and are still testing the waters.  Facebook Marketplace is a great place to start, or kayak fishing Facebook groups.

Paddle

A good quality kayak paddle is a must to get you from point A to point B safely and efficiently.  The OCEANBROAD Kayak Paddle is budget-friendly, yet durable, made with high-quality aluminum.  This kayak paddle is in the middle of a budget price range, but cheap is not the way to go when considering a paddle.

PFD

Safety is of utmost importance when kayak bass fishing,  If you are participating in tournaments, a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is a requirement.  I suggest using it every time you go out in your kayak.

My PFD is the Onyx Kayak Fishing Life Jacket that I purchased from Amazon.  A cheaper, similar version is the AQUAGLIDE Fishing Life Vest, which will save you around twenty bucks.

Budget Rod and Reel

You do not have to spend a fortune on a quality rod and reel.  This KastKing Crixus Fishing Rod and Reel Combo is a great choice for first-time kayak bass fishing anglers.  It has great performance and does not cost as much as other name-brand rod and reel combos.

Fishing Line

Of course, when fishing for bass, your fishing line needs to be durable and have superior strength.  The Reaction Tackle Monofilament Fishing Line is perfect for first-time kayak bass anglers.  They have a variety of freshwater fishing lines that are perfect to catch those large bass, but, within budget constraints.

Basic Tackle

Here is a list of the basic tackle to get you started, without breaking the bank! All of these are budget-friendly and can be found on Amazon or your local bait and tackle stores.

Weights

Since catching bass requires fishing in weeds or water cover, the Reaction Tackle Lead Worm Weight has been great for punching through the elements where bass hide.

Hooks

It’s important to have the correct size hook when it comes to kayak bass fishing.  If the hook is too large, a smaller bass cannot get it into his mouth.

This 25-pack of Reaction Tackle Offset EWG Worm Hooks is budget-friendly, but yet the perfect size for bass fishing.  I have used these for years, and have always had great success with these hooks.

Worms

One of the most affordable and versatile options is plastic worms. Available in a variety of colors and sizes, plastic worms are a go-to lure for many bass anglers.

For a beginner, this set, Reaction Tackle Wacky Worms/Soft Plastic Worm Stick Baits, is perfect.  It’s a 24-pack and these worms are great for finesse, drop shot, Texas rig, and Carolina rig bass fishing techniques.

My Favorite Tackle Box

A good tackle box is a must to keep your baits and tackle organized.  I use the KastKing HyperSeal Waterproof Fishing Tackle Box to keep all of my worms and tackle in one place.  They are waterproof and come in two different sizes.  If you’re just starting, one will suffice.

KastKing Tackle Box Orange

However, as you grow to love kayak bass fishing, you will find that having a separate tackle box for the different types of bait and tackle you have on hand will save you time, and make it easier to find what you are looking for while in your kayak.
